Why the sky is blue?

Did you ever wonder why the is sky just blue and not any other colour is present in day sky? Does it exist physically or it is just an illusion? And why the sky is blue in daytime and black in the night? If you have these questions arising in your mind then you are at right place to know this and much more about our sky.

First of all, you need to know that earth is surrounded by a blanket of different gases and other very small particles, which is known as the earth's atmosphere. Now, these particles have the special property of scattering of light. Scattering of light means is this that these particles can scatter or spread light. So when light travelling in straight line strikes on these particles, it spreads in every direction.

Now let us come to know how these particles in our atmosphere help to paint sky blue by scattering. We receive light from the sun and it has to travel huge distance through space and then enters earth's atmosphere. Now as light passes through the ocean of these tiny-winy particles, it starts scattering. The particles of atmosphere start spreading each colour present in sunlight, as sunlight consists of many colours.

But if it scatters every colour then why we notice only blue colour? This is due to the fact that amount of scattering of any colour depends upon its wavelength. Lesser the wavelength more is the scattering and vice-versa. Now as blue light has smaller wavelength so it is scattered most any other colour with a little longer wavelengths are scattered so little that we can't even notice. So blue colour is predominant. That's why the daytime sky is blue.

But what about night sky?
It's just so simple to answer now. As there is no sun in the night so there is no sunlight, hence there is no scattering at all. Thus night sky is just black, which means the absence of any colour.

Do you know a cloud can be really heavy as it contains millions of tonnes of water. But for us, it just appears some sort of weightless feathers floating in the sky.
