Myth or Truth: Does cellular Mobile towers are really causing Cancer?

Today we are living in a technologically fast world. And in this world of us, Mobile phones have reached almost every hand. We are already using 4G service and 5G is just coming in near future. The wireless mobile phones spread rapidly in the world because they need no wires and can be taken anywhere with ease. It is because these mobile phones work on RF i.e. Radio Frequency to transmit data and voice.

So what is the role of mobile towers in this?

Mobile phones don't use wires but they too need some type of medium to transfer voice or information from one point to another. And this medium is Radiowaves. Radiowave is also a wave-like lightwave but with different energy and wavelength. The cellular mobile towers are used to transmit these radio waves. As the earth is round so we need to install big antennas to receive and emit radio waves to a different part of the region. No single antenna can spread signal all over the world so we have many of them around us. Thus mobile towers are installed on top of the hill or buildings to spread signal as much as possible. They consist of different electronic devices and antennas. When you try to call someone Radio Frequency is sent between your mobile and nearby tower and from there, tower emits this RF into the whole region. Then the mobile phone of the person whom you are calling receive this RF and gets connected to you. Thus in this whole process tower emits Radiowaves around it which works as the wire between your mobile and your friend's mobile.

How much harmful are Radiowaves that towers emit?

Radiowaves that are emitted by mobile towers are the same as heat and light waves. They are exactly like radio waves used in microwave ovens but have somewhat little energy. They are non-ionising waves and do not ionize our tissue or DNA. They just heat our tissues and can't interact with them to break these tissues. On the other hand X-Rays, UV rays and Gamma Rays are ionising radiations as they can interact with our tissues and DNA to break them. So these are ionising radiations which are harmful and overexposure of these radiations can cause cancer. Thus mobile towers do not emit harmful radiations as these are of low energy.

So does mobile towers cause cancer?

Now as you know that mobile towers emit radio waves and these are not capable of interacting with our tissues due to low energy and high wavelength. So these can't cause cancer in principle. Moreover, the energy of these waves goes on decreasing exponentially as the distance increase. So at the ground below the tower, these radiations have very low energy compared to its energy at the point of origin. And if you live as far away from this tower than the radiation that exposes you is of further decreased energy. So we can rule out the possibility of cancer from these radiations. Moreover, there is no authentic data worldwide that tells us that these radiations have caused cancer or any other serious health problems. But there is neither any reliable data to support its hundred per cent harmless effect. Some people living near these towers have reported migraine and headache but there is no proof that this was caused by radiations of these cellular towers.
So we need more data and statistics worldwide to prove whether these radiations can cause minor or major health issues or not. But for now, we can believe that these radiations of mobile towers are not that much harmful as we believe.

You should not expose yourself with X-RAYS for a too long time otherwise it may break DNA or tissues and can cause cancer too.
