Why can't we hear light?

Did you ever try to hear light? Did you ever wonder what sound is of light? Can we hear light the same way as we hear sound waves? Let's try to get answers to these interesting questions?

Why can't we hear light?

Ever since you have born, you have heard different kinds of sounds. But you never heard any light. So question may have raised in  your mind that if both sound and light are waves, then why can we here one and not other i.e. why we can hear waves of sound but not waves of light. For this, we need to understand what sound is and how we hear it.

Why can't we hear light?

A sound is nothing but a vibration of particles of the medium in which it passes. When we say anything we vibrate the molecules of the air near our mouth and this vibration is passed to the next molecule from the previous one. Thus the wave of vibration seems to be travelling in the air. For analogy let's take an example to understand this process easily. Let there is a long queue of people who can't move but are just standing. Now we need to pass a package from the front of the line to the last. So how can we do it? Simply give the package to the person standing in front and then he would pass it to the next person and so on. Thus our package is received by a person standing in last without any person moving from his place. The same way vibration of sound is passed from one molecule to next and this makes a wave of sound that seems to travel in that medium. Now the sound that we produce travels through air same way as described above and reaches the ear of the person we are talking to. Then these vibrations in the air start to vibrate the eardrum of that person in the same manner. And with eardrum are attached some very tiny bones, which too vibrate with it. Now, this vibration reaches cochlea, that transforms these vibrations into nerves and is transmitted to the brain. Thus the brain receives a message in this way and understands what someone is saying.

Though light is a wave it is different then sound wave. The light wave doesn't require any medium to travel as it doesn't produce any vibration. Light is an electromagnetic wave which can travel in a vacuum too as it doesn't need a medium to travel. Thus light wave doesn't produce any vibration and so it can't make our eardrum vibrate, that is why we can't hear light.

The plants are green because they reflect green light and absorb other colour light from sunlight. But if we keep them in green light then they would probably die.
